CHAPTER THREE: LET'S GET LOUD

“Why so many questions about Martin Miller?” Vera asked as one of their friends handed her a drink in a plastic cup.

“Do you want something to drink?” the friend asked Samantha.

“Sunkist,” Samantha replied coolly. Then she turned to Vera who was smirking behind her drink. “Oh, Vera, I—”

She was cut off suddenly as a guy put his arm around Samantha. She flinched and squirmed out of his grasp. It was the stoner dude from earlier.

“Whoa, chica,” the guy said, seemingly offended.

“Whoa, dude, I don’t even know you.”

Vera laughed. “Sam, this is Jake. Jake, this is Samantha.”

“Hi,” Samantha replied casually. Her friend had returned and handed her a can of Sunkist.

“Yo, Sam,” he said with a nod.

“Samantha,” she corrected, opening the can.

The guy nodded with a big, dopey grin on his face. “So, Samantha, Vera, wanna come see my tight pool outside?”

Vera shrugged. “Sure.”

Samantha followed. She wished she was back at home eating Oreos or playing Zelda or sleeping. Hanging out with smug, little Kwame would be better than this.

There were a lot more people in the backyard. Some were high schoolers, and some were college aged. Most of them didn’t look as cool as Samantha, but she figured deep down they were pretty cool.

Speaking of cool, the pool was pretty cool, too. It was the shape of a jelly bean, though Samantha figured the official terminology was “kidney bean-shaped pool.” She liked jelly beans better though. Specifically Jelly Belly.

Even though it was September and still warm out, nobody was swimming in the pool. Samantha turned towards Vera and Jake to comment, but they were busy lighting a joint. Samantha rolled her eyes. Unexpectedly, Martin Miller walked over. Samantha immediately re-evaluated her appearance. Awesome floral dress, awesome denim jacket, awesome jelly sandals. Awesome brown curly hair. Awesome watch. Samantha smiled to herself triumphantly.

Martin Miller and Jake did some weird handshake greeting thing, and then they turned towards Samantha.

“Hey, man,” Jake said after exhaling. “This is Vera, and this is Samantha.” Martin smiled at both Vera and Samantha. “This is Martin.”

“Hi,” Vera said between coughs.

“Heeey,” Samantha said sort of awkwardly with a smile. “Nice, uh, Game Boy.”

Martin smiled. “Thanks. You big on video games?”

Samantha laughed and put her hands on her hips. Then she rocked back and forth on the heels and balls of her feet. “Oh boy, am I.”

“Have you seen the commercials for that new Sims game?” he asked. He took off his glasses and cleaned them on his shirt.

“Yeah, looks kind of lame.”

He laughed again and put his glasses back on. “Totally. Running other people’s lives doesn’t look super fun.”

“Yeah, man,” she agreed though in her head she was starting to think that running tiny, digital people’s lives actually might be super fun. Like, loads of fun for hours on end.

They stood in silence for a few minutes. There was some lame Backstreet Boys song playing. Vera was still standing next to Samantha, though completely oblivious to the conversation – or lack thereof – between Sam and Martin. She and Jake were laughing about something dumb and giggling while glancing over at Martin and Samantha.

“We should hang out sometime,” Martin finally said.

Samantha was caught off guard. “Definitely.”

“After school?”

“Oh. I can’t hang out after school,” Samantha said suddenly.

Martin glanced at her. “Oh?”

“Yeah, I’m busy,” she responded nonchalantly.

“With what?”

She took a quick sip of Sunkist through a neon pink straw. She didn’t remember putting a pink straw in her can. “I volunteer at an animal shelter a few blocks from my house.”

“That’s rad.”

“Yeah. It’s pretty sweet.”

Now Jake walked stepped over towards Samantha and Martin, putting an arm around Martin.

“How you two livin’?” he asked.

Before anyone could answer, a voice shouted from behind: “GANJA MAN!” The stoner dude turned around. There was a tall, thin dark figure standing by the pool. The stoner dude stared at him for a moment before walking over to the dude.

Samantha peered at the dark figure and then grimaced. “That’s the weirdo from Taco Bell!” she exclaimed, grabbing Vera’s arm.

“Huh?” Vera asked, glancing at Samantha and looking back at the dude who was clearly wielding a giant baguette in both of his hands. “He looks like an old, creepy version of the dude from Pretty in Pink.”

“Yes! I thought the same thing!” Samantha squealed with excitement that someone agreed with her.

“But he kind of has a mime thing going on?” Martin asked, also peering at the weirdo.

“Yeah. What’s up with that?” Vera added, tilting her head to the side to better study the dude with the bread.

“Silence!” the man shouted as he waved his baguette in the air. “I am here for you, Ganja man!” The mime dude with the bread fetish stomped towards the stoner dude.

“So how do you know this dude?” Vera whispered out of the corner of her mouth with her eyes locked on the mime dude.

Samantha couldn’t take her eyes off him either. It was like watching a train wreck. “He got mad at me for butting in line at Taco Bell.”

“Lame.”

“So I kicked him in the face.”

“Awesome,” Vera replied. The stoner dude and mime dude were exchanging heated words. Or at least heated hand gestures. It was hard to hear them.

“Yeah. He had bread then too.”

Vera smirked. “Really?”

“Yeah. Like, an entire loaf.”

“I wonder if it’s the same one.”

Samantha hadn’t considered that yet. She shrugged. “That’d be nasty.”

“Do you two have something to share!?” the crazy mime dude shouted in the girls’ direction. He was like some weird, self-conscious teacher who acted offended every time anyone ever had a conversation in class.

Both Vera and Samantha feigned confusion. “Us?” they mouthed, pointing to themselves.

The crazy mime dude’s eyes widened upon recognizing Samantha. “YOU!?” he shouted, now stomping towards her.

“Whoa. Chica, you know him?” the stoner dude asked, lazily following the mime dude over to where Samantha, Vera, and Martin were standing.

“No,” she said plainly. “I beat him up though.”

“WHAT!” the crazy mime dude shouted, throwing his arms up in the air, thus dropping his baguette. He scrambled to catch it in the nick of time.

And then a woman appeared, basically from thin air, and she was dressed very similarly to the weird mime dude – and she was his exact height, too. She had on tight black jeans, too, but instead of a black jean jacket, she had a black denim vest. She also had super curly, platinum blonde hair. It was huge hair.

“Prepare for trouble!” the woman shouted, flourishing her arms to the party-goers.

“Make it double!” the man replied, flourishing his probably stale baguette to the party-goers.

“To protect the world through fermentation…”

“To unite all people with baked good rations,” the man added, doing some weird pre-rehearsed dance thing with the woman.

“To denounce evil against truth and loaves,”

“To extend our reach to unwashed stoves…Baguette!” the man shouted, clearly indicating that that was his name.

“Bun!” the woman shouted, dramatically titling her chin up and staring at the sky.

Samantha looked to her left and then to her right at her fellow party goers to gauge their responses to whatever the hell was going on. They all looked pretty confused. Samantha nodded her head, glad to see that she wasn’t alone.

“Team Breadcrumbs bake off at the speed of light!”

“Surrender now or prepare to fight!”

They stood together with their inner arms interlinked and their outer arms raised and assuming jazz hands.

And then, also rather abruptly, a croissant the size of a small dog showed up between them. “Croissant, that’s right!” it piped in.

Everyone was silent. It was as if Jesus Christ, in a mystical cloud from the heavens, had just presented himself before every living soul at the party and whispered “be not afraid.” But if Jesus Christ looked like the dude with the dreads from Counting Crows or something – like it’d be totally surprising that that’s what Jesus Christ looked like. Like, out of all the people you could look like, that’s who you chose? So, basically, no one really knew how to react to what just happened.

“Is that a talking croissant?” Vera asked, the first to break the silence.

“Yeah…” Martin answered.

“Righteous, dude,” the stoner guy said, smiling and nodding.

“They ripped off Team Rocket,” Samantha reported with rising urgency, glaring at Baguette and Bun.

“They also have a floating, talking croissant,” Vera responded disparagingly.

“Are they magicians?” some party dude asked.

“That’s pretty cool,” some other dude added.

“If you like bread so much why were you at Taco Bell?” Samantha demanded.

The baguette man stared at Samantha for a moment. He didn’t answer.

“Hold up, do you only eat bread because you love it so much? Or do you never eat bread because you love it so much?” Martin asked.

“And can you eat the croissant?” the stoner dude added to the string of questions.

Vera turned to the stoner dude and murmured “good question.”

Both Baguette and Bun remained unwavering in their steely resolve and choice of flayed fingers. But Samantha and company seemed to strike a nerve.

Samantha was particularly disgusted, though, and focused on the hard hitting questions. “To extend our reach to unwashed stoves?” she asked with downright revulsion. “What does that even mean?”

Jake ignored Samantha’s question and stepped forward, towards Baguette and Bun. “Yo, bros, why you gotta ruin my party?”

Baguette and Bun stared menacingly at the stoner dude. “You know why we are here, Ganja Man,” Baguette said. “…to exact revenge.”

“Women read comics. Anyone at all engaged in social media knows this. Women read comics and are a driving force behind fandom. I think I could call them the driving force behind fandom and put up a convincing argument. Just think about it: what fandoms have driven America crazy in the last decade? Could anyone dissuade me from saying that they were Harry Potter, Twilight and the Hunger Games? “Avatar” may have put butts in theater seats, but you don’t hear about it… ever. No one is immersed in the world of “Avatar” except James Cameron and people who enjoy wearing Na’vi Zentai suits. “The Avengers” was pretty darn huge and, if Tumblr is any indication, a whopping portion of the people driving that fandom online do not possess a Y chromosome. Women engage in fandom to levels that men do not. When women get behind something, their sheer numbers and passion force it into the mainstream. That’s why you can name the actor who plays that werewolf kid in “Twilight” and probably sing at least the chorus to one Justin Bieber song. What do tween boys like? I have no clue. Sports? Probably sports.”

Seriously. I don’t understand how film/comic/video game companies can still JUSTIFY marketing solely towards men when women are (increasingly) a major factor in the success of these franchises and projects. It’s incredibly exclusionary when - for instance - the crew of Star Trek Into Darkness defends forcing Alice Eve to undress because “You know, it’s a rather large male fanbase, and JJ wanted to appeal to that.” Oh, of course. The white, heterosexual man comes first. Who cares if women are treated as objects as long as the guys are happy?

Can I just say how cool it was that both of these superheroines’ personalities and powers were explored in this episode? And how well it was done?

Starfire was not shamed for being emotional. Her powers come from her emotions.

Raven was not shamed for suppressing her emotions. Her power requires amazing control.

They both. Work. They are both different kinds of strength, and they are both heroic and powerful and good. And they each learned from the other, and helped each other out by seeing from each others’ perspective, and finding the value in their differing approaches! Wow!

Fuck yes, this is how you write super-ladies, okay. There’s more than one way to be a “strong female character.” There’s all different kinds of strength. Why don’t more people GET this?
